Beyond shopping in Siam area

Siam is Bangkok’s best-known as shopping area. There are several malls of the most varied types, such as MBK, Siam Paragon, Siam Discovery and Central World. But aside from shopping, it also has art and culture tucked in on some alleys. Yes, art spaces in Siam!

If you like shopping, but also like art, then see what else you can do in Siam:

Art Spaces in Siam

The Bangkok Art and Culture Center also known as BACC is an exhibition space that will vary according to the calendar. There’s always something new happening and never a permanent exhibition. In addition there are several art and design shops, workshops, cafes, photography shop, bookstores focused on arts. I found some in English, but most are in Thai Language.

I like to go to art spaces in Siam when I want to be inspired, because in Bangkok Art and Culture Center all spaces are glazed, so even if I do not attend a workshop, I still can see it going on at least for a couple minutes from outside. And also the exhibition rooms are glazed, which makes it easy to identify what kind of exhibit is inside and attend to them.

  • How to get there: National Stadium BTS station
  • Address: Pathumwan Intersection (in front of MBK)
  • Opening hours: 10am – 9pm, closed on Monday

Yelo House is an 40 years old warehouse for printing equipment converted into multi-functioned space to serve as a platform for creative–minded people.  The space is dedicated to exhibitions, meet up, work together in projects and more. The renovation project of warehouse kept the original structure and texture, which made Yelo House even more interesting to visit.

Art spaces in Siam usually have overlooks the canal, and Yelo House runs from a quiet soi through to the canal behind with windows overlooking Saen Saeb canal. I highly recommend the visit to Yelo House because the artists displaying their arts there are relatively unknown yet (!) but with an impressive talent. In addition each exhibition room has a different theme. Read more.

Jim Thompson was a silk entrepreneur and art collector. Born in the USA in 1906, Thompson served the Office of Strategic Services (CIA) in Thailand during WWII. After the war he settled in Bangkok where he quickly became interested in the silk industry and began to invest. He sent some products to London, Paris, and Milan, and his business quickly grew up. Also he was an art collector and this is the most interesting part of visiting Jim Thompson’s house.

Photos are not allowed inside the house, but the during the guided tour you can see and understand a lot about the ancient Thai architecture, meanings, and many art pieces that Jim Thompson collected. And also you can learn some other curiosities that only a local tour guide knows how to explain about Thai culture. I thought I knew some Thai traditions well, having lived here for a while, but I confess that I learned a lot on this guided tour and saw many ancient art pieces there.

Inside the Jim Thompson House complex still there are exhibition spaces, restaurant, silk products shop and a lovely green garden. The guided tour takes about 40 minutes with groups in English, French or Mandarin. I must to say: there’s no option if you want walk inside by yourself, the ticket is to visit all the complex of Jim Thompson House, so yes, you do have to pay if you want to get in. Finally a curiosity: Thompson mysteriously disappeared during a trip to Malaysia. Well
